Could the internet facilitate the struggle of women to achieve their social rights ?
A recent study about women and media & communication technologies indicates that internet publications and information represent an important channel for all sectors of society, particularly women, to communicate and express their views freely.
The study was published by the Arab Women Center for Training and Research (kawthar). It showed that the internet media in the Arab world, though still male oriented in contents and style,it is an important opportunity for women to enhance their role open doors for a larger role in their societies, create the necessary momentum to improve their rights and allow women to work for changing the way the society regard women in general.
Internet, by nature, put women and men on a leveled footing, allow both to communicate and express their views.
The research was a result of cooperation between Kawthar and the Unifem. It is aimed at enhancing other initiatives in the field of acquainting Arab women with information technology, particularly women's presence in electronic media as producer and consumer. It came in a moment when there is an urgent need to explore ways of achieving a larger role for Arab women in that field, which witnesses continues and growing activities.

  • The relation between gender and the digital gap.
  • Trends of women interaction with information and communication technology.
  • Challenges facing women in that field and some positive examples in women' s use of this technology.
The research considers that blogs is an essential way to introduce Arab women to the external world and provides women with a channel to integrate in communities where she is not subjected to discrimination.
Women's blogs are not by any means marginal in the virtual communities and have a more intimate and personal nature.
Communication between men and women is one more feature of the internet blogs which reflects in general a new kind of culture particularly for youth.
The research concluded that it is important to activate the role of Arab women in the field of information and communication technology and unleash the energy of half the human race to participate in the development process through available means and particularly through digital technology.
